Improve Animal Welfare in Abattoirs – We owe the animal respect says Professor Temple Grandin
As intelligent beings we humans can ensure the animals we eat lead good lives and die painlessly and without stress, indeed I believe we have a moral duty to ensure this.
Quote from a Doctor of Animal Science & University Professor…
“I think using animals for food is an ethical thing to do, but we’ve got to do it right. We’ve got to give those animals a decent life and we’ve got to give them a painless death. We owe the animal respect.”
There is a lot of wrong doing in the Meat industry – we really must insist on change!
The top priority must be higher standards of animal welfare at the time of slaughter.
We really must raise the standards in our abattoirs in a way that is fitting for the 21st Century.
Temple Grandin (born August 29, 1947) is an American doctor of animal science and professor at Colorado State University, best selling author, and consultant to the livestock industry on animal behaviour.
As a person with high-functioning autism she cannot lie.
When I design livestock-handling equipment, I can test-run the system in my head. It was easy for me to figure out how animals think and how animals would react because I think visually. Animals don’t think in language. They think in pictures. It’s very easy for me to imagine what would it be like to go through a system if you really were a cow, not a person in a cow costume but really were a cow, and autistic senses and emotions are more like the senses of an animal.
By serving as an advocate and speaker for the animal, Dr. Grandin has changed the demands placed on operations; by explaining the financial and other benefits to operators, she has also helped them justify the outlay in changes and building updates.
“Humane Livestock Handling” is required reading in every college and university level course on the subject today. Her thoughts and words have become a constant guardian of the animal through the new generations of cattle ranchers and slaughter house operators that now slowly enter the industry.
So it makes us wonder how the 21st Century Scholars of Islam can be so out of step…

Unnecessary animal cruelty is accompanied by much wrong doing… this is a quote from a muslim website – when you open the page – See Question 4 which says…
Some Halal meat supplying companies operating in the Halal meat industry in the UK abuse the law and voluntarily liquidate their companies after operating for some time, and by doing so free themselves of their accumulated debt, and then without paying their govt. taxes and debts owed to the farmers they open another company under another name and start operating again. In this way they undercut other law abiding companies engaged in providing Halal meat. These people are a cause of disrepute to the whole Halal meat industry, and they are one of the main reasons why many shortcuts and bad practices aimed at cost cutting have been introduced into the industry. Would Muslim certification bodies be justified denying certification to these companies?
This fatwa was issued in the lead article of the fourth issue of Inspire magazine, which was published on January 16, 2011, Yemeni-American jihadi cleric Anwar Al-Awlaki encourages jihadists living in the West to assist the financing of jihadi activities through any means possible – including theft, embezzlement and seizure of property. The U.S. government, and U.S. citizens are singled out as prime targets for these acts.
Jihad and Terrorism Threat
Apart from the halal industry, there are many other ills in the animal handling industry… Not all of which are purely financially motivated or callous, but often stem from an misunderstanding of the needs and wants of animals.
Slaughterhouses must adapt. It’s not just the financially sound and humane thing to do, it also brings about better operations and better human/animal interactions with all the benefits that brings.
BOYCOTT HALAL and let’s aim by 2020 to transform our slaughterhouses
– get operations working closely or completely within Temple Grandin’s design.
